Gun violence spills into Halton

News Release

January 7, 2006

Halton - Milton: Ted Chudleigh, MPP Halton demanded immediate action by the McGuinty Liberal government to combat violent crime in the Greater Toronto Area in the wake of another shooting, this time at Oakville Place on January 5 at about 9:15 p.m.

A 24 year old man was shot in the leg while in parking lot at Oakville Place Mall located at Trafalgar Road and the QEW. Police are looking for three suspects who fled the scene in a red, four-door Honda Accord.

"The McGuinty Liberals recently announced their plan to put 1,000 officers
on the street for the ninth time since they were elected," said Mr. Chudleigh. "Premier McGuinty is all talk. He expects the problem will die down. Unfortunately it is innocent people who are dying. Even if money was forthcoming on this promise today it would be many months before officers would be out on the street."

In addition to the lack of action on the promise for more police the Ontario
Liberal government has reduced the funding available for those officers from
50 per cent under the previous program to about 35 per cent of the cost of
outfitting, equipping, training and paying a new officer. Measures for additional police and prosecutors announced in Toronto yesterday are simply not enough, in light of other Liberal actions and reactions on related issues, Mr. Chudleigh said.

"The McGuinty Liberals have tried to export the Ontario parole board to the
federal government, which has a revolving door parole policy," said Mr. Chudleigh. "It's no wonder there is a sense of lawlessness pervading Ontario now as even the Liberal Transportation Minister Harinder Takhar refuses to resign in the wake of a damning report on his activities by the Integrity Commissioner."
