Halton Hills - Georgetown:
At the November 1st., 2005 Halton Hills Council Meeting,
Councillor Davis asked staff to explain the 'Seniors Property Tax
Grant'.
Mr. DeSousa explained; "The
grant is intended to qualify seniors, so there is a qualification
process, they have to meet minimum standards, such as receiving old
age security, so there is a formal application process. And the two
hundred dollars is used to reduce their property taxes. And those
who qualify initially are then automatically sent the application
each year as part of their final taxes. So it's intended to reduce
their taxes on an annual basis each year by two hundred dollars."
Councillor Chatten asked Mr.
DeSousa; "How many people toke advantage of that last year?"
Mr. DeSousa replied: "I believe
the number was around one hundred and fifty."
Mr. DeSousa was asked how
Halton Hills 'Seniors Tax Grant' compares with other neighbouring
municipalities? He informed council that he believed the
municipality directly to the south of us (Milton) does not offer a
'Seniors Tax Grant'. Oakville does, but he thought Halton Hills
probably offers the highest grant in the region.
