In the recent issue of The NEW Tanner we read Councillor O'Leary asking his readers to reach into their pockets to help hurricane victims of another country, stating; "cash is the best and suggest you direct any donation, no matter how modest. through the Canadian Red Cross. With special direction to: Please mark your envelope and the 'memo' line of your cheque "for the Gulf States".

Typical for Mike O'Leary to be more concerned about his American idols rather than taking care of his own, right here in Canada.

Last week we read in the Canadian Press:

Hundreds flee flooding in Newfoundland

CANADIAN PRESS

STEPHENVILLE, Nfld. - Hundreds of people in western Newfoundland were evacuated from their homes today and a state of emergency was declared after rain-filled rivers flooded downtown Stephenville.

Last month we read, over and above what our Federal governments had pledged, our own council took the liberty to pledge 5000 of our tax dollars towards hurricane relief efforts in foreign lands, on the premise - it's good for business. How about the hurricane victims here, in our own country?

Perhaps it's time we start asking ourselves; who gave the locally elected individuals of this community the mandate to get involved in charitable donations abroad? If we're going to get involved in giving our tax dollars away to causes, whom council deems fit, shouldn't Canadians be on that list too?

The recent increases in our taxes are a sign that our council should be cutting back. Giving to charities is personal matter of the heart, since when did it become our municipal council's mandate? Our federal and provincial governments have plenty of revenue to take care of our 'business relationships' abroad. How can we make council adress the fundamental problems we in Halton Hills face, like being able to afford to cut our municiple grass?

If you would like to help the victims of this horrible disaster in Canada, there are many ways. Marlena Ljepava has started a one woman crusade to help Canada's own hurricane victims. Her goal is to raise 1 Million Dollars to help victims rebuild  their homes. She has started a trust fund through Scotia Bank. If you would like to donate click the link below.
