Mayor Bonnette's - Cultured Corporate fallacies?

GNN

July 20th, 2005

Halton Hills - Georgetown: In what could be interpreted as an attempt to pull a rabbit out of his hat - during the July 11th, 2005 council meeting, after councillor Davis apologized to the Mayor for showing up, uninvited, to the Halton Hills Canada Day Parade,  Mayor Bonnette went off on a tangent raising issues and making statements that now appear to be unsubstantiated fallacies.

As reported by the Herald earlier, during that council meeting, Councillor Mike Davis raised an issue regarding a commercial development project that had already got to the point where the steel roof trusses were going up, all without a building permit or land severance. Town staff issued a stop work order, but the company continued. There was some talk in council about the company threatening to move to Brampton.

Councillor Davis was adamant about our town strengthening it's reputation  by having staff charge them by the fullest extent of the law, citing a few other occurrences where the same thing has happened.

When the Councillor was finished, Mayor Bonnette stated - he had a few things he'd like to say;

"one of the companies has been in this town for 45 years and has been one of our largest employers in the community".

The Mayor continued - addressing the rumours mentioned in council of the companies treats to move to Brampton;

"and I'll be damned if I'm going to, and to say to our staff, just to say, go to Brampton. Because when they ordered their steel, they had to wait for the steel to come in.  It's not that simple. It's not like buying a ticket to go to the show".

Bonnette continued in his ramblings;

"And this company has 500 employees, many of them are in your (Davis's) ward, my ward, or the town, and in everybody's ward in this community".

Based on what we now know through the course of our own investigation, it appears some of statements made by Mayor Bonnette during that council event, were misleading, inaccurate, if not out right fallacies.

Contrary to what Mayor Bonnette had purported in council, we checked with ISS (Innovative Steel Systems) who operates three companies out of the 35 Sinclair Avenue property, which include; ISS (Innovative Steel Systems), The Metal Group and Premier Tank & Trailer Industries.

ISS spoke person, Karen Sizer confirmed; the company has only been at 35 Sinclair Avenue for about 2 years, collectively employs about 50 employees, and they will not be occupying any of the units at 88 Todd Rd..

The registered property owner - 35 Sinclair Avenue Ltd. spokes person, Gord Facette confirmed; they have not been at the 35 Sinclair Avenue location for 45 years, nor do they employ 500 employees. The three units located at 88 Todd Rd. will be leased out.
