Chudleigh slams Liberal budget

May 12th,  2005

Halton - Queen's Park - Halton MPP Ted Chudleigh today slammed the McGuinty Liberals for reneging for the fourth time on their pledge to balance Ontario's budget.

"First they were going to run balanced budgets every year. Then they decided they would have to wait a few years. Then balance would come in 2007 and yesterday they extended the wait another year to 2008," said Mr. Chudleigh. "They will never balance the books. They are incapable of making the hard decisions necessary."

The Liberal government unveiled its 2005 Ontario budget yesterday trying to spin their continued deficits as fiscal discipline because they weren’t higher, said Mr. Chudleigh.

"They also claimed there were no new taxes, however, some tax hikes announced last year only kick in this year."

Mr. Chudleigh said the Liberals have proven they have no plan for Ontario and are trying desperately to get some credibility back after last year’s disastrous budget where they raised taxes, reduced services and ran a deficit while explicitly promising not to follow that path.

"The Liberals have cut funding to the Ministry of Agriculture when our farmers are already hurting. They've cut funding to municipalities. Even their cornerstone promises in education are so under funded that these are practically broken promises themselves," Mr. Chudleigh said.
